Seniors Embark on Independent Studies

Seniors Embark on Independent Studies

Each year, interested members of the graduating class apply to the Upper School administration for consideration to create an independent study course overseen by a faculty sponsor. For the 2024-25 school year, four members of the Class of 2025 took on projects to explore areas of interest, and we are proud to showcase their amazing results.

Renee Bou Mansour ’25 immersed herself in Universal Design in Architecture (Faculty Sponsor: Mr. Laurion) with the goal of assessing the Rutgers Prep campus for accessibility. Renee undertook a campus review of ingress, egress, walkways, bathrooms, drinking fountains, multi-level buildings, and more to make suggestions on how the campus could be more accessible to all visitors and community members. Renee presented her findings four times this year to members of the faculty and staff and made valuable recommendations to improve the accessibility across campus.

Cheng Hua ’25 explored Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning in Computer Science (Faculty Sponsor: Mr. Lake) by creating an innovative oral history project using cutting-edge NLP technology to capture, analyze, and preserve personal narratives for future generations. Cheng’s interactive website helps people involved in major historical events record and share their stories.

Sawyer Moss ’25 and Daniel Hristov ’25 did more than tinker with an Independent Study titled Engineering Design and Production in Physics/Mechanics (Faculty Sponsor: Drew Schoudel). Sawyer and Dan built a fully functional go-kart from scratch, moving through the design (CAD), building, and testing phases during the 24-25 school year. The project culminated with an on-campus demonstration of the go-kart presented to faculty, staff, family, and friends.

Congratulations to Renee, Cheng, Sawyer, and Daniel on all of the hard work!
