Alumnus Matt van Roemer ’14 Speaks to Sports Analytics Club
The Sports Analytics Club recently welcomed back Matt von Roemer ’14 for a virtual visit focused on his career and the growing role of data in professional baseball.
A Rutgers Prep alumnus and the son of Lower School teacher Sandi Klinger, von Roemer is currently a Double-A bench coach in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He has held several roles with the team, including work in baseball technology and player development, and was part of the organization during its run to the World Series this past season.
During his talk, von Roemer explained how teams use data, video, and technology to support player development and game strategy. He also shared how his interests in baseball and academics shaped his path, from playing at Rutgers Prep and Kenyon College to entering professional baseball through an internship.
Students asked thoughtful questions about career paths, technology in sports, and how teams balance data with on-field experience. The conversation gave them a firsthand look at how skills learned at school can translate into real-world work.
We appreciate alumni like Matt who take the time to share their expertise with the RPS community. Thank you, Matt!
