Cookie Carving Makes for a Sweet Start in Eighth Grade Art

Cookie Carving Makes for a Sweet Start in Eighth Grade Art

In Ms. Albright’s Art 8 class this morning, students tried their hand at sculpture, albeit with a tasty twist. Their medium? Oreo cookies.

First, they learned about positive and negative space and sketched out designs that incorporated the concepts. Then, they set to work recreating the sketches in the cream filling of the Oreos.

We always tell our students that making mistakes is part of learning, but that lesson was quite literally easier to swallow today when they could snack on any mishaps.

This activity is an introduction to carving and sculpture and helps prepare students as they move on to other media not as easy to work with (or anywhere near as delicious). We're looking forward to seeing what they work on next!
