A Fun (Size) 5th Grade Science Project
When kids sort through their haul of Halloween candy, they’re usually hoping to find Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, M&M’s, or Snickers.
Our Fifth Graders, though, strange as it may sound, also had their eyes out for whatever might make for good mitochondria, chloroplasts, or endoplasmic reticula. That’s because Mrs. Vinchur’s science students have been doing an in-depth study of plant and animal cells and their structures.
Last week, they were tasked with creating accurate cell models with all of their constituent parts using just Halloween candy they were willing to part with. While we’re pretty sure that organelles like vacuoles and the Golgi apparatus will never make a list of top Halloween treats, the candy versions in this project looked surprisingly tasty.
